What Is a Breast Reduction?

Overly large breasts can cause some women to have both health and emotional problems. In addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort.

The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts is as important an issue to many women as the physical discomfort and pain.

Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Dr. Wotowic is the best hands down!!! I had a breast reduction & lift back in 2009 ; I was 22 years old and had no idea what to except! Dr. Wotowic asked me to trust him and I did exactly that. Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

The best candidates for breast reduction are individuals who are looking to address chronic neck/back/shoulder pain, rashes beneath the breasts, and painful bra-strap indentations.

Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery are looking to feel more comfortable with their body image. Good candidates want to live an active lifestyle without the frustration that comes with oversized breasts.

Breast reduction candidates must have good overall physical health. A BMI of 30 or less will help prevent complications during the procedure and recovery period.

Patients must avoid smoking for at least four to six weeks before their breast reduction. Do not drink alcohol 48 hours before the appointment.

When considering a breast reduction procedure, it is best to set realistic expectations. Results are different for every patient. The procedure will be highly individualized to match your appearance goals.

Your Breast Reduction Consultation

During the breast reduction consultation, you will be asked about your goals. The surgical techniques will be discussed to help you understand the whole procedure and possible results. Be ready to provide your complete medical history to confirm your eligibility for the procedure.

You may need to take a few lab tests to help Dr. Wotowic plan an effective and safe procedure. Make sure to follow our special list of instructions to help you prepare before the breast reduction appointment.

The Procedure

The breast reduction procedure will begin with administering general anesthesia. This type of anesthesia makes the patient unconscious during the entirety of the surgery.

Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Wotowic will create incisions. The exact type of incisions created will depend on the amount of tissue to be removed.

Next, fat, glandular breast tissue, and/or excess skin will be removed. The areolae may also be resized and repositioned.

The incisions will be closed with sutures. The whole procedure takes two to three hours. You may need to stay in the surgical center for one or two nights.

The Recovery Process

It is important to get a lot of rest a week after the breast reduction procedure. Arrange enough pillows for support to help you sleep in the proper position. Avoid putting pressure on the breasts.

Take the recommended pain medication and change the dressing as directed by the surgeon. You will need to wear a supportive post-surgical bra.

Take around one week off from work for recovery. You can resume desk work after this time. Strenuous activities like sports or heavy exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.
